What Is Democracy

Democracy is a form of government in which the people have the power freely to elect representatives to carry on the government. Democrat is one who believes in democracy as a principle.

The word democracy is derived from the Greek words ‘demos’ meaning the people and ‘krateein’ meaning to rule.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th century president of America, stated clearly that democracy is “Government of the people, by the people and for the people”.

Each letter in the word democracy has significance. ‘D’ stands for dignity of labor, ‘E’ stands for equality, ‘M’ stands for mutual appreciation, ‘O’ stands for objective attitude, ‘C stands for co-operation, ‘R’ for respect for others, ‘A’ for adjustment, ‘C’ concern for others and ‘Y’ yearning for living.

In current days some of the democratic countries are India, United States of America, Austria, Mexico, Portugal etc
